We wanted to share with you what has touched the hearts of many, which shows the fate and hidden faces of HIV victims and the real reflection of HIV/AIDS. It is a brief story of Samuel Desta. A 28-year-old man who lives with HIV. Abesha care started supporting Samuel Meheret since he had been diagnosed as HIV positive in Cairo, Egypt. He was identified through our online discussion forum.
As he was facing a change in social support, a deteriorating health condition and financial situation, he became frightened, bewildered, and worried. Others rejected and treated him inappropriately; he also became depressed, angry, and isolated.
It was at that time that Abesha Care stepped in and through our discussion forum Sammy was able to share with other people his deepest secrets and touch the hearts of many and still be loved. In our online discussion forum, we have sessions to discuss concerns with others sharing the same experiences and emotions and to work out complex feelings of worthlessness, frustration, or alienation. We talked about life and we also got a guest to come in and teach us nutrition, legal aspects, and many other related issues. These programs played a significant role to save Sammy’s life so we know how important it can be for others in similar situations. Abesha care often became a major source of love and acceptance in Sammy’s life. Usually other people gain acceptance, support, nurturing, and intimacy from their birth families, close friendship groups, and/or religious groups, such as churches. Abesha care helped Sammy to deal with his issues of anticipatory loss and grief, isolation, helplessness, hopelessness, his feelings about care-giving, fear of contagion and infection, changed social conditions, health concerns, and obsessive thoughts. Unfortunately our effort to provide him with proper medication was not successful in Cairo, Egypt. We organized our groups and managed to raise funds for his transportation to Ethiopia and to cover the expenses for immediate attention in a private hospital facility in Addis Ababa for about 2 weeks.
After being discharged from the hospital, he continued his treatment as an outpatient and started his new life with his aunt, who decided to move back with him from Cairo, in a rental residence. Samuel is under Abesha Care for his basic needs (shelter, food, communication, transportation….etc) and the required treatment. The Abesha Care group is responsible for paying all his expenses until he will be able to seek other opportunities for himself. Since we are beginners and have so many projects ahead of us, we need your support to cover the expenses for Samuel and his aunt (caregiver).
